The same product sells through channels that want opposite things from packaging. Getting this wrong costs margin or kills the sale.
Retail
Shelf presence rules: consumer pack sizes (500 g–2 kg typical), clean graphics, barcodes, tamper evidence and stackability. Presentation damage tolerance is low — one crushed clamshell is one lost sale.
Food-service
Kitchen efficiency rules: 2.5–10 kg formats, easy opening, portioning guidance, resealability where practical, and durability over beauty. Chefs forgive plain packs; they do not forgive packs that slow service.
Industrial processing
Cost and consistency rule: bulk formats, liners that empty cleanly, lot traceability and specification sheets that survive audit. Presentation is irrelevant; repeatability is everything.
Cross-channel pitfalls
Do not retail-pack an industrial order (you are paying for graphics nobody sees) and do not bulk-pack retail (you are asking the store to rework). Private label sits between: retail presentation with your specification discipline.
Asking the right question
Before quoting, every professional supplier asks: which channel, which pack size, which market? If your supplier does not ask, you are buying a habit, not a solution.
